knitting, Spinning

Three weeks of crafting – pt. 4

After I finished hats for both hubby and my dad in December, I had yarn left from my Gotland lamb handspun yarn. While cleaning for the New Year, I found some previous handspun from when I first got my Spin-E-Kube wheel. It was 144 yards of a worsted-ish weight yarn, (10 wpi falls between worsted and DK on my wrap card). I wanted to use every inch of the yarn so I cast on a Musselburgh hat. It’s the same pattern I used for both hubby and my dad’s hats but for theirs, I stopped halfway and added ribbing for a regular beanie style.

For some reason, I couldn’t find a picture of the yarn after spinning and plying but I was able to screenshot it from my IG. The fiber is BFL and the colorway is Athena, bought from my LYS. That’s all I have written down about the fiber, the tag lost long ago. Anyways I took a guess and grabbed my size 8 circular needles and cast on, which happen to give me a gauge of 5.5 stitches per inch. I knit an adult medium hat and absolutely love the result. I was able to knit about half the hat in this yarn and knit the rest with the leftovers of the Gotland lamb and some Targhee Debioulette cross. The hat is super warm and slightly slouchy which works perfectly for how I like to wear my hats.

Now everything is caught up and ready for my current work in progress which will wait for another day. It is a sample knit for my LYS and several firsts/new things for me. First pattern from Casapinka, a new yarn, new technique – mosaic knitting, and a new brand of needles. After I watched a few videos on mosaic knitting and stopped making it harder than it actually was, I’m enjoying the knitting.

Until next time, Laugh often, love deeply, and knit the day away!
